We left San Antonio at nine thirty this morning. We aren’t planning on going back to Texas unless we go to Galveston. Road construction everywhere, reckless driving, trash on the sides or the interstate, extremely windy, dusty and dirty. A barren desolate land. Our next stop is Red Barn RV Park, Roswell, NM (526m). Roswell offers art, wineries, lakes and a UFO crash site. There is a lot to do in Roswell, it’s not just for aliens any more.
We are staying at an RV park in Big Spring, TX for the night, it’s like the last big joke of Texas. The RV park is more like a junk yard or construction site. The owners said he just bought the place. It must have been cheap, real cheap. They are working hard to improve the park but I think it will take a year to really make a difference.

The first thing Carol saw when we left Big Spring were Prairie Dogs in the fields. This was in the morning when everything wasn’t hiding from the heat.
From Big Spring to Roswell we were on two and four lane highway. The roads were great with passing zones every few miles on the two lane roads. We had high winds and a few minor dust storms but nothing to worry about.
On the interstate we normally get between nine and ten mpg at sixty five mph. On flat roads like these we would get ten to eleven mpg under good conditions. We were going north, into the wind today were averaging six and a half mpg. When we turned west and had the wind pushing us the mileage increased up to ten mpg.
Once we were away from the cities there are endless fields as far as the eye could see, mile after mile with various crops. It’s hard to imagine anyone working in such a windy harsh environment. If you go back thirty years, tractors didn’t have enclosed cabs with heating and air-conditioning and they didn’t have headlights. There was a time when all farm equipment was pulled by horse or oxen. It’s hard to imagine the type of person that would choose that type of life. Our founding fathers may have had an idea of what they wanted this country to be but these are the people that built this country. They fought and died for this land. We are fortunate to have them as the forefathers and foremothers of our country. As we drive through this country and look at its history whether it be in the cities and towns, our cemeteries or just look at the work it took and takes to keep our flag flying, be glad these people were and are there. Yes we are Americans but more importantly, we are citizens of the United States of America.
We just crossed into New Mexico and it changed from farming to ranching. Fenced fields with cattle or horses and a few (wild) pronghorn antelope.
The wind calmed down and the sky changed from dusty brown to bright blue.
